Welcome to Year 2!
In Year 2 all our learning is delivered in a stimulating, creative and thematic approach. We have lots to learn but intend to have a lot of fun!
This term our theme is ‘The Great Fire of London’. We will we focusing on lots of exciting learning around the theme of how the Great Fire of London impacted on the city, its inhabitants and the history of the UK.
In English we are basing our work around the texts about The Great Fire of London. Throughout our exploration of this text we will look at some different vocabulary as well as inference, grammar and narrative skills. We will also be doing some work around bonfire poetry and identifying the different features. We will be using our Talk for Writing approach when introducing these texts.
During this topic we will be looking at significant events that have happened in history and how these have impacted on people's lives. We will be sequencing events and asking and answering questions about them, using historical evidence.
This year we will be following a new reading challenge. The children can travel through their class reading challenge adventure and collect gold stars along the way. Each gold star is worth a raffle ticket. There will be a raffle draw every half term and the children have a chance to win a brand new book to keep. We hope you will join us in developing a love of reading in your child by reading regularly at home. If you have any questions regarding our new reading challenge, please do not hesitate to ask Miss Coates or Miss Cooke.
Other areas of the Curriculum:
In Science we are going to look at ‘materials’.
The children will be identifying and comparing the suitability of everyday materials and their uses. We will be describing how the shape of solid objects can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.
In History we will be learning all about The Great Fire of London. We will be conducting our own research into this historic event as well as writing our own eye-witness accounts. We will be taking on the role of characters from the past and writing diary entries and newspaper reports about this significant event.
Throughout this topic, we will be using different materials to create individual and whole class artwork. The children will be making textured collages from a variety of media; by folding, tearing and crumpling materials. The children will be experimenting with a range of tools and materials to create their own landscape of the London skyline during The Great Fire of London.
We will be learning about algorithms and designing and creating our own. We will be using logical reason to predict outcomes and correcting errors by debugging the algorithms.
We will continue to follow the school safer internet rules whilst using the internet for learning and communicating with others. Our class E-Cadets will support us in the delivery of safer internet use.
We will also be learning some basic French language skills and applying them when talking to one another.
In Year 2 we will do PE on Friday. This half term we will be focusing on 'motor movement skills' during our PE lessons. We will be learning how to use our body in a variety of ways, as these are the fundamental skills needed to participate in a variety of different sports.
