j Y2 - Barnton

Welcome to Year 2!

In Year 2 all our learning is delivered in a stimulating, creative and thematic approach. We have lots to learn but intend to have a lot of fun along the way too!

This term our theme is ‘Circus Skills’. We will be learning about all things related to The Circus and finding out where it all began.

In English we are basing our learning around lots of different circus themed books! We will be developing our poetry skills, story writing skills and non-fiction writing this term!

Reading Passport

This term we will be continuing our exciting new initiative to encourage children to read at least three times a week at home. Not only will the children be stimulated to read more, but will also go on a journey around the world as they read! Please continue to support your child with this adventure at home and ensure you record every time they read at home in their planner.

Other areas of the Curriculum:

In science we are going to look at ‘Animals including Humans’. The children will look at parts of the body and what we use them for, how to care for themselves and others and also, how we grow and change. It would be really helpful if the children could bring in photographs of themselves as babies so that we can see how they have changed. We will also be sorting and classifying different animals into groups. We will be comparing a variety of animals with humans.

In History we will be finding out about the history of the circus and how the circus began. We will be looking at significant people related to the circus and creating a fact file all about them. We will be creating timelines of significant events that happened in the circus.

In Geography we will be looking at the four countries of the United Kingdom and their capital cities. The children will spend some time outside and in the local area exploring their surroundings and completing fieldwork. The children will be developing their map skills and will be learning how to correctly use a compass to navigate around the local area.

In Art we will be creating our very own sculptures of different characters from the circus. We will be practising our moulding and sculpting techniques to create our masterpieces. Watch this space to see our creations of acrobats, trapeze artists, clowns, jugglers and much more!

In Year 2 we will do PE on Tuesday when we are very fortunate to have Judo sessions this half term.   Please make sure PE kits are in school at all times and include: Joggers, trainers, pumps, a white T shirt and a jumper. Swimming lessons start for Year 2 on Thursday 4th May so please ensure children have their swimming kit with them every Thursday.

Please come along and enjoy our family assemblies at 9:10 am on Wednesday mornings. Please check the weekly bulletin in case the assembly is cancelled or if in doubt check with your child’s class teacher or in the office.
