j Y4 - Barnton

Welcome to Year 4

Welcome to Spring 2 in Year 4.

This is a short but exciting half term. We will be preparing for our Year 4 residential to Chasewater which takes place in the week after the Easter Holidays.

In English we are basing our work around the text 'Gorilla' written by Anthony Browne. Throughout our exploration of this text, we will look at vocabulary as well as inference, grammar and narrative skills. Alongside this text we will be using the book King Kong also by Anthony Browne, Ape by Martin Jenkins and Gorilla Journal by Carolyn Franklin to further enrich our understanding and exposure to fabulous narrative and non-fiction language and structures.

During our first week we will focus on poetry. The poem that we will be learning is called 'Gorilla' by Martin Honeysett . During this week we will be doing lots of vocabulary work as well as identifying poetic devices. We will be using our Talk for Writing approach throughout our English Lessons.

In Maths, we will be continuing with fractions, then moving onto decimals. We will be deepening our understanding through a mastery approach with lots of investigations and reasoning.

Times tables - By the end of Year 4 children need to know all their times tables facts to 12x12. We test their times tables knowledge on Fridays. There are so many games, activities and apps that can support you and your child in learning these fundamental skills. Please ask us if you need any support.

 Other areas of the curriculum:

In Science we will be learning about Sound! We will be discovering how sound is made and how we hear sound. We will be investigating how sounds travel through different mediums and how sound can be changed.

In RE, we will be learning about Palm Sunday and the Christian celebration of Easter. We will be exploring how Christians express their faith through the arts; looking at textiles, stained glass windows and music.

In History we will be looking at the Ancient Greeks. We will be learning about life in Ancient Greece; the different city states; the birth of democracy; the Olympic Games; gods and goddess and the Battle of Troy.

In DT we will be learning all about structures! We will be learning the design process from brief to conception. We will evaluate our designs and finished structures.

In SEAL this half term our topic is 'Going for Goals'. We will be learning to identify our personal strengths and weaknesses; setting ourselves targets and developing challenges to achieve those targets. We will also be using this to promote a healthy active lifestyle.

We will be finding out about hardware and processing.

We will also be expanding on our basic French language skills and applying them when talking to one another.

In Year 4 we will do PE on Wednesday and Thursday. This half term we will be focusing on dance and having cricket lessons with Mark.

Please make sure PE kits are in school at all times and include Winter PE kit, as we will still be going outside during all weathers.
