Special Educational Needs And Disabilities (SEND)

We are delighted to announce that in 2019, Barnton Community Nursery and Primary School became a Flagship “Centre of Excellence” for Inclusion. This reflects the extremely high standard of provision we achieve for each and every child, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

We are proud to be a School of Opportunity, where every child is supported and encouraged to achieve their full potential and to find their unique gifts and talents.

What is SEN?

A child has SEN (special educational needs) if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. There are four broad areas of need which are:

  • Cognition and Learning – including Global Developmental Delay and Specific Learning Difficulties such as dyslexia. Some children with genetic conditions may fall into this category.
  • Communication and Interaction – including Autism Spectrum Disorder and Speech and Language difficulties including Developmental Language Disorder.
  • Sensory and Physical – including sensory, visual and hearing impairments, as well as physical disabilities.
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health – including attachment, ADHD, developmental trauma, depression and anxiety.

Some children may have special educational needs that cross over more than one category.

Information about what we can offer to your child is included in the documents below – but please contact us directly to discuss things further or to arrange a visit to the school.
